Draußen vor der Tür (theatre in german language)

by Wolfgang Borchert

Soul in ruins
A man returns from captivity. His name is Beckmann. He no longer has a first name. He hopes for a new beginning and meets one person after another. He recognises many of the doors he sees. But one door after another closes. In the end, he has to stay outside the doors. Only the cold water of the Elbe flows and waits for him. He is tormented by the question of responsibility. A question that others have long since suppressed. The boundaries between reality and nightmare become blurred. Or has the nightmare become reality?
In May 1945, Wolfgang Borchert himself returned from captivity as a prisoner of war, seriously ill. He wrote his drama ‘Outside the Door’ in just eight days. It is regarded as THE German anti-war drama par excellence. Borchert did not live to see its great success; he died one day before the play's premiere in 1947, at the age of 26. His story of a man who returns from the war emotionally shattered is timeless. Thomas Bockelmann's production is an ‘evening in which the theatre leaves room to think and breathe’ (Frankfurter Rundschau).
