State of the Union (theatre in german language)

A guest performance by the Volkstheater, Vienna

Nick Hornby’s quintessentially British humour regularly turns his books into bestsellers. *State of the Union* was first released as a TV series and went on to become a huge success as a book, including in its German translation under the title *Keiner hat gesagt, dass du ausziehen sollst*. In it, Hornby deals with the perfectly normal madness of human coexistence in a fast-paced and incisive manner, demonstrating just how much dramatic potential a marital crisis holds. A wonderful source material, then, for Jan Philipp Gloger’s production.

Tom and Louise – he a music critic, she a doctor – are trying to salvage what can be salvaged in couples’ counselling following a sexless spell and an affair. However, we don’t witness them during the sessions themselves, but rather in the spaces in between, both in terms of location and time: over a drink to pluck up courage in the pub opposite, they quickly map out the topics to be discussed. Through clever and rapid-fire dialogue, fundamental questions about human love life are raised quite casually. Sometimes one has the upper hand, sometimes the other, and neither of them misses an opportunity for a good punchline. And suddenly, things are brought up that everyone who’s been through the trials of relationships probably thinks from time to time – but would certainly never say out loud.
