A racist sentence in a school essay. Just as the teacher is about to mark it in red, she hesitates. Didn't she hear that on the radio once before? So she leaves the sentence as it is, because what someone says on the radio cannot be crossed out by a teacher in a school notebook. And as she continues reading, she keeps hearing the radio: it howls, it barks, it coos, it threatens – and the newspapers reprint it, and the children copy it down. In the past, the truth was supposed to be taught in class. Today, teachers avoid certain truths so as not to lose their jobs. She takes her class on a camping trip that changes everything...

Amidst the global rise of right-wing parties, Ödön von Horváth's 1938 novel ‘Youth Without God’ takes on frightening relevance. In his stage adaptation, director Markolf Naujoks takes an unsparing look at a society in transition and raises the question of individual responsibility at a time when the values of peaceful coexistence are under threat.
