Maria Amelia Monti and Gigio Alberti bring LUNGS/Polmoni to the stage, a whirlwind dialogue that spans a couple’s entire life. Having previously shared the stage, Monti and Alberti – actors of extraordinary theatrical experience, capable of navigating a range of registers and emotions with depth and authenticity – reunite today to give voice and substance to a text of exceptional power, poised to engage, surprise and leave a lasting impression.
Relying solely on the power of the spoken word, they bring to the stage the great anxieties of our age: from climate change to economic uncertainty, right through to the fragility of emotions. The real driving force behind the show, however, is its overwhelming irony.
Duncan Macmillan, an English playwright known in Italy for *Every Brilliant Thing* and his more recent *People, Places & Things*, crafts a script brimming with rapid-fire dialogue and everyday neuroses, which Monti and Alberti navigate with unique comic mastery.
With their ability to alternate between emotion and sarcasm, the two protagonists render a deeply intimate story universal, presenting us with a portrait of a couple that is at once ruthless and liberatingly cheerful.
