Reigen (theatre in german language)
with lyrics by Arthur Schnitzler
Musicbanda FRANUI after Gustav Mahler, John Cage, Franz Schubert, Erik Satie, Giuseppe Verdi, Johannes Brahms and others.
Music for hours spent together
Arthur Schnitzler's "Reigen" caused a scandal after its premiere in 1920, leading to a performance ban. Today, Schnitzler's ten variations on coitus function as an entertaining psychogram, especially when Franui turns it into a drama with music: actors Regina Fritsch and Sven-Eric Bechtolf - both stars at Vienna's Burgtheater - interpret the text, and Franui - "the world's most intelligent village band" (Die Zeit) - immerses each scene in a new musical milieu: The maid from Bohemia walks hand in hand with Gustav Mahler, Erik Satie strums in the chambre séparée, the poet's remarks are accompanied by sounds by John Cage, and in the marital bedroom an aria by Giuseppe Verdi resounds in memory of the Italian honeymoon. Wherever intercourse finally takes place (which in Schnitzler's work is succinctly indicated by three strokes), there is always plenty of room for music. The evening is not a concert, not a reading, not a theatre performance, not music theatre, not a radio play - and yet it is something of everything. At the Bregenz Festival, the audience thanked the audience with ovations for this extraordinary programme: "Grandiose speakers, fabulous musicians." (Kronenzeitung Vorarlberg).
