Canada in the 1930s. Everett Lewis lives as a fishmonger retired on the east coast. When he decides to hire a housekeeper, only Maud Dowley answers his ad. Maud has been suffering from a severe form of arthritis since childhood, she hobbles and her hands are crippled. She is driven by her great passion, painting. The first oil paints she gets from Everett, who has long since recognized that Maud is good as a housekeeper. Instead of cleaning, she paints the entire house with colorful pictures - and thus increasingly arouses the feelings of grumpy Everett.
