The Source (theatre in german language)
A guest performance by Theater am Werk, Vienna, in collaboration with DOSSIER and the Schauspielhaus Wien
Whether it’s the Ibiza affair or the NSA revelations: behind these scandals that have come to light are people who have passed on sensitive information to the media. The English term ‘whistleblower’ for such informants is linguistically similar to the German ‘verpfeifen’, but carries far more positive connotations.
The director and writer Calle Fuhr held discussions with journalists from Austria and Germany to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of so-called whistleblowing. He was also able to make personal contact with some of the sources. The resulting psychological thriller is fictional – though full of allusions to real-life cases: methane is leaking from a pipeline in Lower Austria. Cows are dropping dead. The company responsible, Power, maintains a policy of silence – out of concern for its share price. But someone passes on the explosive information … A dynamic game of cat and mouse begins between the company, committed journalists and a mysterious whistleblower.
Calle Fuhr has collaborated on several occasions with the investigative journalism platform DOSSIER on plays such as *Die Redaktion* and *Aufstieg und Fall des Herrn René Benko*. *Die Quelle* is their latest successful joint project.
Running time: approx. 2 hours 10 mins (one interval)
