Yannis Xenakis: Sextet ‘Les Plejades’
Iannis Xenakis' ‘Plejaden’ (Pléiades) is a percussion sextet composed in 1979, inspired by the constellation of the same name. The work is characterised by a high degree of technical complexity and places extreme demands on the six percussionists, who must play the specially developed instrument ‘Sixxen’, among other things. “Pleiades” is considered one of the most important works in the history of percussion music. The name ‘Pleiades’ was borrowed from Greek mythology, which describes the Pleiades as the daughters of Atlas and Pleione.
The individual movements of the piece are named after their sound characteristics and refer to the instruments used in them.
